Meet the Maker - Ania Sikorska
Posted on 21 Sep 09:00
For this weeks installment of our 'Meet the Maker' talks we speak to Ania Sikorska about her graduate collection entitled Arche'. A vibrant and collection of statement earrings that are perfect for adding pops of colour to an outfit whilst the use of contemporary materials, such as 3D-printed Nylon, allows these creations to be lightweight and durable.
When did you start creating jewellery?
I began taking evening jewellery classes in 2016 and quickly developed a passion for crafting with precious materials.
Who inspires you the most?
Other jewellers: Ezra Satok-Wolman, Helen Britton, Lynne MacLachlan, Diana Porter, Pawel Kaczynski and many more...
Which is your favourite piece in your collection?
Choosing just one item is challenging because each piece complements the others perfectly as they are part of one collection. However, I am particularly drawn to earrings in which I combined 3D-printed nylon elements with organic-looking silver findings. I believe this works surprisingly well.
Please can you tell us a bit about your creative process?
When it comes to the methods I use within my practice, I like to combine different techniques. I am fascinated by new technologies and the perspectives they open up. I enjoy designing my models in CAD and printing them with 3D printers; however, I also like sitting at my bench and making handmade jewellery.
What’s next for your creative practice?
I have already started expanding my recent collection, so I am sure I will spend more time doing that. I also want to present new pieces at the Elements festival in Edinburgh this year, so I am working hard towards this exhibition, too.
Finally, for fun, what would be your dream piece to make or person to make for?
I really would like to make a piece of jewellery for Bjork. She has become a massive source of inspiration for me this year. Her recent album called Fossora is a very nature-oriented work. Even when singing about her ancestors and descendants, she does it in the context of the land of fire and ice that binds them. In terms of visuals, videos, album covers and outfits, she has recently presented herself as a glowing forest sprite, which I love. She embodies the world she lives in, and this is the experience of nature that I want to offer everyone wearing the pieces from my Arche collection. So yes, I would choose her.
